BOXING: Kevin Reynolds brought a little bit of Las Vegas magic with him Friday night to the River Rock Casino in Richmond.

Only it wasn't to get lucky at the blackjack table or the slot machines. The Vancouver-based cruiserweight, who spent two weeks in Vegas early this month working with veteran trainer Jesse Reid, put that experience to good use in a six-round majority decision over tough Frank White of Sarnia, Ont., in front of 950 pro fight fans at the River Rock.

Reynolds, (7-1) carried the early action against White, (3-2-1) but was stunned by a good left hook in the fourth round. Reynolds gamely weathered a flurry from White and won the fight -- one of three judges scored it even -- with a strong final round.

"He caught me in the fourth with a good shot, but I retaliated well," said Reynolds, 27 and the No. 3 ranked cruiserweight in Canada, one spot ahead of White. "Adversity is always good to face early in your career. It's a good learning curve for me."

Reynolds gave his Vancouver trainer, Jesse Veerasammy, credit for the "selfless act" in sending him to Reid.

"He thought that would be better for me, wasn't going to try to hold me for his own. I love the guy. He thought Jesse could bring out something in me. It helped me a ton."

Reynolds, who runs the successful Contenders gym and fitness centre in Vancouver, says he'd like to stay stay busy -- "a fight a month going forward." He's eyeing James Cermak, a cruiserweight out of Edmonton with an 11-2 record, and then a rematch in six months with Canadian champion Ron Henney, against whom he suffered his only loss.
